Location of Cambridge Station and Scudamore's Boathouse (1 square = 1/2 km):
Local Ordinance Survey map of River Cam (1 square = 1 km):
The punting route along the upper Cam is well described elsewhere
(see e.g. Scudamore's
Guide or
The
Upper River (scroll down)).
The route passes through the famous Granchester meadows where, according to
legend, the early Pink Floyd spent time "grooving in a cave with a pict".
[No cave or pict to be found these days - so must have been in the mind...]
In the village of Granchester is the residence of the well-known writer
Jeffrey Archer.
The local church in Grantchester was made famous by the 1st world war
poet Rupert Brooke who died in 1915 (but not in battle). The opening lines
of one of his most famous poems is quoted below:
On to more practical things such as beer, Grantchester has 4 pubs
(the
Rupert
Brooke, the
Green
Man, the
Red
Lion, and the
Blue Ball Inn)
plus a tea garden called The Orchard.
Warning: Many Cambridge trains depart from the old suburban
station (high platform numbers 9-11 on far left-hand side of main
station) adjacent to platform 8
- check train departure boards carefully!
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust conceal'd;
... etc.
