The section of the card outlined in red shows the address or file number for the database entry. This is based on the volume of issue, which is 7 in this instance, and an individual number within that volume, which is 216 here. Hence, the higher the volume number, the more recent is the database entry: for example, volume 7 was issued in 1967, while volume 49 was issued in 1999. More recently, much higher volume numbers have been created based on data obtained from diffraction patterns that have been calculated using known crystal structures.
